Monday 20th February – windsurf ***** Playa Villananitos at Lo Pagan – cloudy and cool :(

F2 Ride 282, 34 cm fin, Tushingham X – 15 5.8 – wind Levante – NE 20/30
Max. 31.12 kts, ave. 29.56 kts, 50 km (30 miles), mile 26.49 kts , alpha 21.11 kts , hour 19.30 kts.

Even though windy in the night it was quiet in our sheltered spot on the road right by the beach at Playa Villananitos at Lo Pagan and no trouble from the police despite facing the wrong way up a one-way street! After yesterday’s epic 63-mile session I wasn’t a 100% when I woke this morning so was not too disappointed that it was cloudy but still windy. Very quiet with no locals turning up to sail until 11.30! It was breezier than yesterday so it’s good to know what the resident sailors are rigging. A quick walk up the prom to see what kit they were using - they were going for small wave/freeride boards and 5.2’s so I went for my X – 15 5.8, my smallest sail with the 282 hoping to switch to the Falcon 80 once I had tested the conditions. On the water, just after 11.45 and headed to the windmill path and hit my net which was close to the shore, most of the locals are using wave or weed fins. On my first run I did 29 kts so things were looking promising but the wind as usual is gusty and the water a little lumpy - great fun non-the less, also getting a nice mile and several good alphas – top day despite the lack of sunshine.
I tried for an hour even if not fit and got my best of the holiday so far and then broke 30 kts for the first time this year but couldn’t get enough gusts to get a 30 kt average. I had a max of 31 kts chasing and overtaking a kitesurfer then in the end, went over 30 kts 4 times. After over an hour I went ashore to give the 80 a try but Mag had gone for a walk so I couldn’t get in the van. Went back out on the big board again for a while but the wind seemed particularly gusty so called it a day after 80 mins. With more wind, tomorrow and hopefully some sun I thought it best to save myself.
Mag was back at the van by now after an epic walk to the Salinas de San Pedro a Parque Regional spotting loads of birds including, Avocets, Black Winged Stilts, Flamingos, Redshank, Spotted Redshank, Wood Sandpiper, Ring Plover and Shell Ducks she even remembered her binoculars and did well to walk that far in the cool wind. Packed up, managed a little lunch (still feeling a bit blah) had a nice chat to an ex.pat who comes from Essex and still works at Felixstowe docks when he goes home which he does in the summer as it’s very crowded here.
We then had a bit of a ride round just to charge the battery gong first to the next resort up the coast, then watch 6 wave sailors out at the port before stopping on the reserve to see loads of birds feeding close to the shore before heading to the cake shop in Lo pagan and returning to our spot by the beach for the night.
